Day 1: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park

Amboseli may be smaller than many other Kenyan parks, but it packs a lot into a very small space. For starters, the views here are astonishing because Africa’s highest mountain, Mt Kilimanjaro (5895m), looms over the park to the south. Best of all, the mountain provides a backdrop to many fantastic wildlife sightings that almost always include elephants with big tusks, as well as lions, cheetahs, hyenas, zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, wildebeests and gazelles. Birders can also look for the park’s 420 different recorded species

Enjoy getting to know Tsavo West, with its stunning landscapes and interesting populations of elephants (which often look red because of the Tsavo dust in which they bathe) and lions (many of the males don’t have manes). You also have a chance of seeing rhino, hippo, hyena, buffalo, zebra, giraffe and even leopard, as well as many different kinds of birds (over 400 types have been seen here).

Accommodation | Day 3: Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge | Inside Tsavo West National Park

The views from the open-fronted restaurant at Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge sweep out beyond a waterhole and across the plains towards Mt Kilimanjaro, which is one reason among many to linger over your meals here. The rooms are large and have traditional safari colors and mosquito nets, there’s a swimming pool and a gift shop, and the location deep in Tsavo West National Park is also a winner.

Day 4: Tsavo West to Tsavo East National Park

Welcome to Tsavo East, one of Kenya’s largest and wildest national parks. The rugged landscape is best known for its lions (many of the males have very scruffy manes, if at all), and for its many elephants coated in Tsavo’s distinctive red dust. The park’s east is generally excellent for cheetah sightings, while other elusive species include the Somali ostrich, gerenuk and the extremely rare hirola antelope. Nearly 500 bird species have been sighted here.

Accommodation | Day 4: Voi Safari Lodge | Inside Tsavo East National Park

You’ll enjoy the rooms at Voi Safari Lodge, but it’s the location that really stands out: the lodge climbs a hillside that overlooks a waterhole and the view extends out across Tsavo East National Park.
Elephants frequently visit the waterhole and there’s a photographic hide at water level. Many of the rooms have views, there’s a pool, and there’s a bar and restaurant in the main building

Day 5: Tsavo East National Park to Diani Beach

Diani Beach is simply stunning. Apart from lazing on the pretty curve of sand overlooking the Indian Ocean, you’ll love the lush palm forests, coral mosques nearby and plenty of fine places to eat, drink and enjoy the gentle sea breeze.
There’s so much for you to enjoy in Mombasa, from the markets and spicy Swahili cooking to the architecture and fine Indian Ocean location.
